Northern Europe refers to Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland and also overseas territories of these countries, such as the Faroe Islands etc. Atlantic Ocean to the west, Baltic countries to the east, Arctic Ocean to the north, facing Central Europe to the south, Nordic countries cover a territory of more than 1,3 million km2. The area is densely mountainous. The winter in Northern Europe is rather long and cold, summers are short and moderately cool. Population density is quite low there, economy is considered to be one of the strongest in the world, welfare benefits are guaranteed for everybody. In Northern European countries the GNP per capita is ranked among the highest in the world.
