The Republic of Lithuania is located on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea. Latvia to the north, Belarus to the southeast, Russian Federation’s Kaliningrad to the southwest and Poland to the south. The capital is Vilnius. Lithuania is a country with long history, through centuries it was competing with Russia over the supremacy in Northeastern Europe. Lithuania has been occupied by the Russian Empire and Soviet Union. In 1990 Lithuania declared its independence and in 1991 is was officially acknowledged as an independent country. Lithuania is a member of the European Union, NATO and Schengen convention.
In Lithuania places worth seeing are the capital Vilnius, old capital Kaunas and Trakai with its beautiful lakes and an old palace.
Lithuania’s most famous culinary dish is perhaps cold beetroot soup. Potatoes also make a regular appearance on the menus, popular dishes are the potato pancakes and Cepelinai – potato dumplings stuffed with meat, curd cheese or mushrooms.
