Croatia is situated in the southeastern part of Europe on the Balkan Peninsula on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. In 1991 Croatia separated from former socialist federation of Yugoslavia and declared its independence. Zagreb became the capital of the country. At first there was a civil war which had a strong influence on the economy. But now the country has recovered and has joined NATO and the European Union.
